An interesting quote about books

I am reading a book of essays where poets are writing about their work. One writer, Boris Pasternak, says, “A book is a cubic piece of burning, smoking conscience–and nothing else.”  That really caught my attention. I’m thinking about what Pasternak means by that. Does he mean that his books, and the books he reads are writers’ explorations of what they believe, that they are connected to the search for truth and understanding about life? What is your thought on this idea?
