Essential Questions for the Unit:

  • How do poets create meaning?
  • How do you appreciate poetry?

The Enduring Understandings Aimed for in this Unit are::

  • poetry is the interactive layering of effects (compact language, figures of speech, imagery, structure and other poetic devices) in a condensed form to generate meaning and convey emotion.
  • reading a poem aloud expressively interprets the poem’s meaning.
  • the meaning of a poem is revealed through close reading of the text (several times) and noting the author’s craft.
  • writing gains strength through multiple drafts and revision.

Reading Literature:

Key Ideas and Details  RL 7.2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

Craft and Structure
4. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.
